Fun Facts About Phosphoric Acid

1. Phosphoric acid is known to “imitate” saliva this gives soft drinks the “thirst quenching” property (Max French, 2010). This is largely due to the similarity in consistency between the two, and the sour taste of phosphoric acid. It's like drinking your own spit!

2. Phosphoric acid was discovered by K. W. Scheele and J. G.Gahn in bone ash in 1770.

3. Phosphoric acid is used in winemaking as an additive for flavour enhancement but is, however, banned from commercial, US wine products... This acid is commonly used in DIY wine creation.

4. Phosphoric acid is surprisingly used as an additive in cigarettes... Who knew you could smoke acid!

5. The annual production of phosphoric acid worldwide is 38 million tonnes!!
